A New Focus Just Because

As most of you already know, I am a big fan of the summer series "The Next Food Network Star". Truth be told, I'm a foodie through and through. Culinary entertainment and activities are my creative outlet, and of course The Man About The House has come to enjoy this hobby of mine!

For a year I have wanted to begin vlogging some demonstrations of favorite foods. There are many reasons.

1. I now have three grown daughters who are in new stages of their own culinary development. This is a way for me to have some time in the kitchen, so to speak, with them and continue teaching skills as they develop into their own style and culinary points of view.

2. I want to hone in on my camera chops to prepare for my own audition and pursuit of being on The Next Food Network Star!

3. Probably the biggest reasons is she makes this look like fun!

So, this is a work in process. Please be kind in feedback with my "episodes", but I can take it as well. I really want to learn and grow. Feel free to share recipes and ideas...I want to hear from you if you're taking time out of your day to stay in touch!

Also, a big shout out to my cousin, Peter Mowry and his fellow musician Brian Westrin for their permission to use their music off their "Epiphany" album!! Thanks guys! If you don't know their stuff, listen here...

So, without any more delay, enjoy the first episode of "Inside Mom's Kitchen"!

Also, the first learning curve is the length of the video and quality of it! I had to use a lessor quality in sharing because the limit was 2 GB and mine was 2.1!

It'll be better next time :)

yay! You are off to a great start! I like how you are using this as a way to teach viewers how to cook. It seems that all of the cooking shows assume viewers know how to do things, but you don't make assumptions. I think that can be a good "schtick" for you. I like the idea of a cooking show that makes great food, but also teaches newbies how to use a kitchen.

observations/comments
1. you said "um" a lot. It is a hard word to get rid of.

2. you pointed out several times that you "didn't go to culinary school," "maybe don't have great knife skills," etc. you don't have to make any excuses for anything. You are a good cook and I think you are a natural teacher, so have complete confidence in all of your skills and ideas. If you lack certain skills, maybe you should hone them.
3. Garland needs to take out a wall so you are always facing the audience! (move to michigan and get a kitchen with that feture)

I think this is a great idea! I would have a hard time videoing me teaching my class for everyone to watch and make suggestions, etc. My hat is off to you. I can't wait for episode two!

The blog is gorgeous! Super appetizing and inviting.

You made me feel at home, and comfortable, in your video. It is extremely helpful to video yourself, something Don helped me with for a poetry reading a few years ago. I learned a lot about performing!

What comes through, and always will, is that you love to cook, and teaching out of your passion will serve you well. You're a natural teacher!

Don-Thanks for your thoughts and input! As soon as I viewed the clips I heard the um's as well! Wouldn't a bigger kitchen be great? :)

Ruth-it's surprising how unnerving it felt when Emma began the camera, especially with all my experience doing things in front of people. I didn't expect that at all!

Thanks for the thoughts!

Shari, I loved this! My mouth watered and I am one of those blessed with enjoying your culinary gifts! But please, Uncle Don, I'm not ready for Shari to be in a bigger kitchen in Michigan...can I have her a little longer here in Florida with me?

Maybe we should shoot an episode in Linda's kitchen!! :)

I made this recipe last night but instead of sweet potatoes I added imitation crab (the kind made from white fish, not from corn). I also did poached eggs on top instead of fried.

Love you Mom!

:)

Linda, it is definitely our turn. Fla has had shari and garland long enough. we need the jobs up here in Mi when shari gets her own tv show. i can see it now "pasties, Mac fudge and cherries"

Katy- That variation sounds great! Not surprised at all with the poached eggs :)

Don - Garland left his saws-all with me to start opening up that wall. :)
Our timeline is about a year off. Quite frankly, Garland is swamped and it's going to take a year before I have gotten the house ready for a move (at least it feels that way now!)

Oh my goodness, honey...what a fun new blog!! I loved watching every minute, of course ~ who wouldn't, when it's the talented daughter-cook! I'm going to make this recipe for Rodger and me to enjoy at lunch very soon. Thanks to you and Emma for a very delightful "read" just a few mins. ago. 'Loved all the comments from those who love you. And I love you, too! 'Can't wait for Episode #2...Mom (with a big smile!)
